Rochester is a city with a remarkable history, and its pubs have played an important part in that story. On this relaxed walking tour, we’ll explore the historic streets of Rochester while discovering some of the characters, stories and events that have helped shape the city.
Our tour begins outside Rochester Railway Station, before we head into the heart of the historic city. Along the way we’ll visit four historic pubs, each with its own character and connection to Rochester’s fascinating past.
The tour is led by Ben Crozier, Boots On Adventures’ history walk leader, who will share stories of Rochester’s past as we make our way from pub to pub.
And these aren’t just ordinary historical tales. Expect stories involving German spies who found themselves working as pub landlords, a monk who came to a very bad end, and an artist with surprisingly lethal tendencies. Along the way we’ll also discover more about the people who have passed through Rochester and the role its pubs have played in the life of the city.
Rochester is also famously associated with Charles Dickens, and we’ll be walking through streets and places connected to the great Victorian author. The city has welcomed everyone from ordinary workers and travellers to royalty, and its historic pubs provide a fascinating window into the lives of those who have lived, worked and visited here over the centuries.
This isn’t a strenuous walk. The route is approximately 2 miles and takes around four hours, with the time allowing for our visits to the four pubs and the stories we’ll hear along the way. The walking itself is entirely on the streets of Rochester.
