Historical Pub Tour of Maidstone — Discover the Stories Behind the Town’s Most Characterful Pubs

Join us for a relaxed daytime walking tour through Maidstone’s historic pubs, where real local history, colourful characters, and centuries of brewing tradition come together in the heart of Kent’s county town.

Starting outside Maidstone East, we’ll wander through the town centre and visit four historic pubs, each chosen for its atmosphere, stories, and place in Maidstone’s past. From cosy coaching inns once visited by travellers such as Charles Dickens and Samuel Pepys, to centuries-old taverns filled with local legends, this walk brings together the best of Maidstone’s heritage.

Along the way, you’ll hear about the town’s brewing industry, the long-vanished breweries that once dominated the Medway, and the role these pubs played in everyday life. Expect a mix of light-hearted tales and darker local history — including ghostly Cavaliers, mischievous Victorian children, wartime airmen blaming their misfortunes on “Gremlins,” and even the scandalous behaviour of politicians who used certain pubs for meetings they probably shouldn’t have had.

This guided tour is designed to be informative, social, and easy-paced, with plenty of time to enjoy a drink if you choose. We finish at Maidstone West, close to further pubs, cafés, and transport links.

Whether you’re a lover of Kentish history, a fan of traditional pubs, or simply looking for a unique way to explore Maidstone, this tour offers a fresh and entertaining perspective on the town’s past.

A great day out, rich in history, character, and the stories that bring Maidstone’s pubs to life.

The tour starts promptly on time. If you’re running a bit behind schedule, give us a call to inform us (you’ll find our number on your booking confirmation if you’ve booked through the website, or message via MeetUp).
