Whitstable to birchington: A Coastal Journey of Sun, Sea & Seaside Stops

A quick intro

This 22.5 km coastal adventure begins in the lively town of Whitstable, famous for its oysters and seaside charm, and follows the shoreline all the way to Birchington-on-Sea. You’ll enjoy uninterrupted sea views, long stretches of beach, and salty breezes the entire way.

The walk is mostly flat and paved or compacted trail, making it comfortable underfoot. Around halfway, you’ll stop in Herne Bay for a well-earned lunch and (optional!) sea swim — perfect for the brave-hearted. The final stretch continues along the promenade and sea wall until you reach Minnis Bay.

Learn more aboutthis wonderful walk

We’ll be setting off from the vibrant seaside town of Whitstable, famous for its oysters, beach huts, and easygoing charm. From there, our group will follow the shoreline east on a scenic 22.5 km journey that promises sea air, coastal views, and plenty of good company.

The path will hug the coast the entire way — mostly flat and easy underfoot — giving us all the chance to chat, unwind, and soak up the sound of the waves and the open horizon ahead.

Around halfway, we’ll reach Herne Bay, a lively stop where we can refuel with lunch, grab an ice cream, or — for the bold among us — take a dip in the sea. Whether you’re up for a swim or prefer cheering from the shore, it’s a brilliant moment to pause and enjoy the classic British seaside.

After regrouping, we’ll continue along the coast, passing the iconic Reculver Towers standing proud above the shoreline. It’s the perfect spot for a break, a few photos, and a breath of fresh air before we carry on to the final leg.

Our walk will end at Minnis Bay, just beyond Birchington-on-Sea, where we’ll toast our efforts with drinks (and maybe chips!) at the Minnis Bay Bar & Brasserie. From there, it’s a short walk to the train station for a smooth journey home.

The walk starts promptly on time. If you’re running a bit behind schedule, give us a call to inform us.
