As proud North Downs Way Ambassadors, Boots on Adventures has been invited to lead this free guided walk, designed to showcase some of the finest countryside surrounding Canterbury while welcoming both experienced walkers and those looking to enjoy one of their first longer countryside adventures.

Starting from YHA Canterbury, the route follows beautiful sections of both the North Downs Way National Trail and the Elham Valley Way, leading through orchards, rolling farmland, and peaceful woodland towards the picturesque villages of Patrixbourne and Bekesbourne.

Along the journey, we’ll pass the remains of the medieval Well Chapel, a fascinating historic site dating back to before 1300, before enjoying one of the walk’s most unusual highlights as we cross by the elephant enclosure at Howletts Wild Animal Park. Learn more aboutthis wonderful walk

Discover the beauty of the Kent Downs on this free guided walk as part of the YHA Festival of Walking, an event encouraging more people to discover the physical and mental benefits of spending time outdoors. Led by the experienced Boots on Adventures team, this approximately nine-mile circular route showcases some of the finest countryside surrounding Canterbury while remaining welcoming and accessible to those new to guided walking.

Beginning at YHA Canterbury on New Dover Road, the walk quickly leaves the city behind, joining the North Downs Way National Trail, one of England’s National Trails and a route renowned for its rolling chalk hills, ancient woodlands, and panoramic countryside views. As official North Downs Way Ambassadors, we’re delighted to share some of our favourite sections of this remarkable trail.

The route also follows part of the Elham Valley Way, adding another dimension to the journey as it links together quiet countryside, traditional orchards, open farmland, and peaceful woodland. Despite being just a short distance from Canterbury, the landscape soon feels wonderfully rural, offering a real escape into nature.

One of the historical highlights of the walk is the remains of Well Chapel, a medieval chapel believed to date from before the 14th century. Although only fragments remain today, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the area’s rich history and the centuries of travellers who have passed through this corner of Kent.

Perhaps the most memorable feature of the route comes as we pass the elephant enclosure at Howletts Wild Animal Park, where there is often the opportunity to catch a glimpse of these magnificent animals from a truly unique perspective, creating a moment that surprises many first-time visitors to the area.

The picturesque villages of Patrixbourne and Bekesbourne provide further highlights along the route, each offering traditional Kentish charm surrounded by beautiful countryside. Quiet lanes, historic buildings, and peaceful surroundings make these villages a pleasure to explore as we continue our circular walk.

The route covers approximately nine miles and takes around five hours at a relaxed, sociable pace, with plenty of opportunities to stop, enjoy the scenery, and learn about the landscape and history of the area. While there are a few gentle climbs typical of the North Downs, the paths are generally well maintained and suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.

Whether you’re completely new to guided walking or simply looking to discover another beautiful corner of Kent, this walk offers a friendly introduction to the outstanding countryside that surrounds Canterbury. Combining National Trails, fascinating history, picturesque villages, and unforgettable views, it’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the YHA Festival of Walking and experience why so many people fall in love with the Kent Downs.
