A Midweek Walk in the Kent Countryside
A quick intro
Join us on Wednesday 21 October 2026 for a scenic weekday walk through the beautiful Hothfield Heathland Nature Reserve and the surrounding Kent countryside. Starting from the nature reserve, we’ll head towards Little Chart, following sections of the Stour Valley Walk and taking in the peaceful fields and rural landscapes along the way.
The route offers a lovely mix of open heathland, countryside paths and quiet village scenery, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the natural surroundings and discover this special corner of Kent. Hothfield Heathland is one of Kent’s remaining areas of lowland heath, providing an important habitat for a variety of wildlife.
As we make our way back towards the nature reserve, we’ll have time to enjoy the changing scenery and the tranquillity of the landscape. While the Highland cattle are no longer present, the heathland remains a great place to look out for wildlife and enjoy a peaceful walk through one of Kent’s distinctive natural landscapes.

- We welcome friendly dogs on our walks, provided they remain on a lead at all times. The owner is fully responsible for their dog throughout the walk.
- We take photos during our walks for promotional and training purposes. If you prefer not to be included, just let us know on the day.

This walk begins at Hothfield Heathlands, one of the most distinctive natural landscapes in this part of Kent. From the starting point, we head out across the heathland before joining the countryside paths towards Little Chart, taking in a mixture of open heath, woodland, farmland and quiet rural lanes along the way.
This is a walk for those who enjoy varied countryside rather than a single type of landscape. There is plenty to look at along the way, whether you are interested in nature, local history, wildlife or simply getting out into the Kent countryside.
The contrast between the rare heathland and bog habitats at Hothfield, the open farmland and the village surroundings of Little Chart makes this an interesting route at any time of year. In wetter weather, some of the natural paths can become muddy and uneven, so sturdy walking footwear is recommended. Kent Wildlife Trust also notes that paths further from the car park can become wetter and more eroded after heavy rain.
There is also plenty of opportunity to simply slow down and enjoy the surroundings. This is the sort of walk where the landscape changes gradually as you move through it — making it a rewarding weekday escape into the Kent countryside.
Please note: the Highland cattle that were previously associated with Hothfield Heathlands have been removed from the reserve for the time being, so they should not be expected on this walk.
